WOMEN'S TRACK AND FIELD Cardinals take first place at the Miani Invitational

Team dominates competition with 26 top-10 finishes

Ball State showed up ready to run at the Miami Invitational. The Cards won six events and took home the team title. They scored 144.5 points, which was more than thirty ahead of host Miami. The meet featured four other Mid-American Conference schools and a field of thirteen teams.

Sophomores Amanda Barnhart (long jump), Rose Lehe (3,000-meter steeplechase), Amanda Ponsot (800 meters) and freshmen Yvonne Ferguson (200-meter dash) and Christina Whitt (400-meter dash), as well as the 4x100 relay team, all won their events.

"It was the first time I had done the steeple this year, and I wasn't quite sure about it," Lehe said. "I probably beat some pretty good people. My time wasn't as fast as I had hoped for, but for the first time, I guess that was OK."

Barnhart scored a personal-best distance of 20-4 1/2 and qualified for the NCAA regional. She also set the meet record which had been held by former Ball State jumper Patricia Soman, who jumped at 20-4 1/4 in 2003.

Junior Jill Scully was third in 1,500 meters while sophomore Amanda Brewer finished third in the 400-meter hurdles while scoring her best time of the season.

Finishing fourth for Ball State were senior Holly Flittner (hammer), sophomore Terri Abraham (long jump) and freshman Amber Williams (200-meter dash). Meanwhile, the 4x400 relay team was second in its race.

"It was fun to win the meet," Lehe said. "It was good team effort."

The Cards finished with 28 top-10 finishes for the event. The team travels to Knoxville to take part in the Searay Relays from April 13 to 16.
