State awards project contract

Transportation department accepts $5.4 million bid

The Indiana Department of Transportation officially awarded E and B Paving Inc. of Anderson the $5.4 million McKinley Project contract Monday, officials said.

Brian Crume, area manager of E and B Paving, said he has been in contact with the department of transportation's area engineer and is ready for the preconstruction meeting April 18.

The state had to have a special bid session last week after both contractors' initial McKinley Project bids were higher than state engineers' recommendations.

Construction is set to begin May 9, as soon as possible after spring commencement, James Lowe, director of facilities assessment and engineering, said.

"It will be a fun challenge," Crume said. "We'll have 25 to 40 workers out at any given time, so it'll be congested."

Nine major groups will work together on the project, Crume said. Among them will be electricians, excavation crews, brick layers, masons and landscape artists.

Crume expects crews to work six days a week from May 9 until classes begin in August, he said.

The project will include repaving McKinley Avenue, adding a median and expanding the avenue around the west side of Shafer Tower, among other renovations.
