SOFTBALL Cards get no-hit, lose 3-2 to Huskies

After winter weather pushed play back a day, the softball team lost a pair of close games to Toledo on Sunday. Ball State (10-21) lost on the last play of each game, 1-0 and 3-2, to begin Mid-American Conference play.

Toledo's Stephanie Moore tossed a no-hitter in the first game. Moore struck out two batters, while walking one and hitting two. The win evened her record to 7-7.

Nikki Hellem threw the first six innings for the Cardinals. She got into trouble in the seventh inning and loaded the bases before being replaced by Amy Brownfield. The first batter Brownfield faced, Leslie Stong, singled for the game-winning run.

Toledo scattered nine hits and left nine on base. Ball State stranded three runners.

In a marathon second game, Toledo outlasted the Cardinals in 12 innings. Gina Muratori hit a two-out single to plate the winning run in the 3:16 game.

The Cards scored both of their runs in the fourth inning thanks to a two-run homer by Sarah McGregor. She leads the team with five deep shots this year.

Ball State had six hits in the game, led by Taylor Yancey's two. Toledo had seven hits, but stranded 11 baserunners.

Both pitchers showcased their abilities in the second game, as each recorded double-digit strikeout figures. Brownfield (4-5) struck out 10 batters while going the distance for the Cards. Kim Pettitt also went the distance for the Rockets, striking out 13 in the win.

The teams will play the finale of the three-game series at noon today.
