The trend of allowing runs early in the game continued for the softball team on Tuesday. Ball State allowed Indiana to score three runs in the first inning on the way to a 6-0 loss in Bloomington.
The Cardinals (6-16) mustered only two hits in the game. Alyssa Huffman reached on a bunt single in the sixth inning, and Amanda Pick followed with a two-out double to left field. The Cards attempt to score was halted as Kelli Jeziorski grounded out to end the inning.
Indiana (9-21) used eight hits to win its third game out of the last five. The Hoosiers jumped out to a three-run lead after the first and plated another two scores in the second inning.
Pick started the game pitching for the Cards, but lasted just over one inning. Pick (0-1) allowed five runs in her first decision of the year. Nikki Hellem pitched the remainder of the game, allowing one run on three hits.
Giving up runs early in the game has hurt BSU in recent games. The Cards struggled with this during the first two games of the Ohio State Buckeye Invitational last weekend. Ohio State scored three runs in the first inning on the way to a 10-2 win, while Marshall jumped out to a 4-0 lead after the opening inning.
"Our M.O. all year is that we give up a lot of runs in the first few innings," head coach Terri Laux said following the Ohio State tournament.
Ball State will finish its non-conference road schedule this weekend at the Hawkeye Classic in Iowa City.
