SWIMMING & DIVING Cardinals to compete in MAC Championship

Ball State placed fourth out of nine teams at last year's meet

Ball State looks to improve on last season's fourth-place finish when it competes in the Mid-American Conference Championships today through Saturday.

The meet, which is at Ohio University, begins at 11 a.m. with preliminaries for the 500-meter freestyle and goes through 9:30 p.m. Saturday.

The Cardinals went 6-4 in dual meets this season, including 4-3 in MAC competition. Last year at the MAC Championships the Cards placed fourth out of nine teams with 400.5 points. Miami won with a 664 total, followed by Ohio (547) and Bowling Green (405). Kait Martin, a senior in 2004, had the highest individual place, taking second in the 100 backstroke.

The women beat Bowling Green 186-113 earlier this season, but they fell to Ohio (171-128) and Miami (177-118). The Ohio meet, on Feb. 5, was the last time the Cardinals competed. Jenna Arnold (200 butterfly), Mary Brinkoetter (200 backstroke), Tara Zimmer (200 breast stroke) and Michelle Braden (400 individual medley) won individual events for BSU.

Seniors Michelle Arakgi and Karla Bailey, along with freshman Ashley VanOsdel, are also among the team's top performers this season. The diving corps consists of Katie Boyle, Valerie McGowan, Stephanie Paul, Cassandra Pavlovich and Paige Vernasco.
