Junior Cameron Radford won the ninth Papi Chulo Contest Friday sponsored by Gamma Phi Omega in the L.A. Pittenger Student Center.
Out of the nine contestants, Radford was crowned after he displayed his poetry writing skills, robe and boxers and showed off his silvery silky nylon suit to the crowd.
When Radford, sponsored by the Black Student Association and the Latino Student Union, was asked to describe the women of the Delta Chapter, he said, "Nothing but class. They're always supportive."
The winner should truly represent the women of Gamma Phi Omega by being a gentleman that the sorority members will look up to, Catherine Zakrajsek, president and secretary of Delta Chapter, said.
"All of the contestants are friends of the chapter," Zakrajsek said, "and we've always looked to them for help and support."
Zac Davis, a sophomore representing Spectrum, BSA, LSU and the American Asian Student Association, placed second next to Radford.
"They always help us out when we ask," Davis said. "So when I was asked to help them, I said 'sure.'"
The contestants were asked to join the event because they were all big supporters of the chapter, Zakrajsek said.
Third place contestant Brent Lyle said that the he was glad to be involved in an event that helped the campus to better know the sorority.
"The time they spend," Lyle said, "It's dedication."
The contestants had three categories for competition: a talent portion, a sleepwear portion and a question and answer session while each man was dressed in their best.
The top three contestant were honored with trophies. The winner also received a sash, a $100 scholarship and will attend a dinner by the Delta Chapter, Zakrajsek said.
The contest started after the founders started it in 1991, the group's first year on campus. The contest was started to help promoted the organization and its cultural ties on campus.
