OUR VIEW: Non-election

AT ISSUE: Lack of interest means SGA slate runs unopposed

Elections are held for numerous reasons.

Some are for governmental positions, others for referendums or even school district concerns or issues. Other more pressing elections can change the laws and alter an organization's constitution.

The bottom line in all these situations is that an election is held for some group of people to make a choice.

However, it becomes difficult to hold such elections when choices are limited -- or, in the case of Ball State's Student Government Association, nonexistent.

In the royal unveiling of the slates Monday night, there was a significant problem. There weren't slates plural, just one slate -- singular.

Steve Geraci and "Team Us" will, by default, take the helm of Ball State SGA when President Ben Tietz's "Team Tietz" ends its term later this spring.

Sadly, out of an entire population of Ball State students, only one team of candidates successfully completed the minor requirements to throw the members' collective hat into the SGA slate ring.

Election packets were due Monday night, and required, at worst, a petition containing 400 signatures.

Now, that lack of leadership certainly makes us wonder. If no one cares enough to make a difference...

- Why did so many students debate the building of a new BSU student center last year?

- How are we to expect new security measures such as security cameras and lighted paths?

- Why are organizations so worried about cosponsorship?

- How do we expect our course registration to show professor's names?

- How will library hours get extended?

- Would we still be able to take 18 hours of classes without being charged extra?

These are just a few of the ways that past student government teams have influenced the campus in which we study today.

Imagine what is still left to be done -- most of us know: We complain about it every day.

Pardoning those involved in alternate forms of SGA/campus leadership, out of 18,000 of us, only four managed to work together to build a slate?

It is pathetic to say the least.

Ball State students may certainly now be the epitome of apathy.
