GYMNASTICS Cards raise bar over Eagles on Saturday

All season long, the gymnastics team has struggled to post competitive scores resulting in lopsided defeats. Ball State reversed both trends Saturday at Eastern Michigan.

The Cardinals scored above 192 for the first time all season and posted a 192.200-192.025 conference victory over the Eagles (2-7).

Ball State (3-12, 1-3 Mid-American Conference) registered a season-high team score largely due to the individual efforts of two seniors -- Jessica Surridge and Jessica Stevenson. The duo combined to win or tie for first place in all four events.

Surridge tallied a 38.750 all-around score to tie for first with Eastern's Jolene Worley. She won the vault with a score of 9.675 and tied for first on bars (9.750).

Stevenson took first place on beam (9.775) and tied for first on the floor with freshman Brittany George (9.775).

The Cards tallied scores of 48.400 on floor, 48.275 on bars, 48.025 on beam and 47.500 on vault.

Kelli Davis competed on vault and bars after missing the previous meet due to an ankle injury. Davis posted scores of 9.575 on vault and 9.000 on bars.

The meet at Eastern was the final of four straight road trips. The Cards will return home Friday when defending MAC champion Central Michigan visits for a 7 p.m. conference showdown.
