Panel upholds BSU decision to close charter school

Officials close Fort Wayne academy for low enrollment, debt

A charter school panel upheld Ball State University's decision to revoke Urban Brightest Community Academy's charter starting July 30.

Ball State decided to revoke the Fort Wayne school's charter after learning of problems with debt and low enrollment.

Rod Davis, Ball State University Charter Schools Hearing Panel chair and associate dean of the Miller College of Business, said that after examining the school's ability to address these concerns, it is the panel's opinion that Ball State made the right choice.

"The university's concern that the academy is not currently able to provide an adequate educational experience for its students was compelling," Davis said.

Heather Shupp, Executive Director of University Communications said the panel listed eight reasons for revoking Urban Brightest's charter.

Several reasons for revoking the charter were the school's failure to submit reports to the Indiana Department of Education, enrollment of fewer than 60 students and a $649,000 debt.

The Ball State Office of Charter Schools first expressed concern with Urban Brightest in April when the school was behind schedule in many areas at once.

The panel's decision follows Acting President Beverly Pitts' notice of intent to revoke the charter school on June 14.

Davis said the decision was difficult, because the schools' leadership was thorough, professional and passionate about the opportunities they were trying to provide for students.
