Akron Zips
The artificial field is completed on the Akron football field,and the attention has been turned to the construction of the trackon the outside. The 300-meter track features six lanes with aneight-lane straightway, as well as areas for horizontal andvertical jumps and throwing events.
Julie Wright was named head softball coach on July 16, and beganduties on July 19. She played at Ohio from 1990-94, and spent thelast five years as a top assistant coach at Kansas.
Buffalo
Former University at Buffalo soccer player Kevin Pitra died onJuly 10 of cancer. Pitra was a four-year letter winner at Buffaloand was team captain in his senior year. He was named to the thirdteam All-Region his senior year. Pitra was 24.
Central Michigan
Erik Olson, an assistant coach at the University of Miami thepast three seasons, has been named the head volleyball coach atCentral Michigan University. Olson becomes the fourth coach in theprogram's history which began in 1974.
Eastern Michigan
EMU will be represented once again at the Olympic Games asformer trackman Jamie Nieto won the high jump at the U.S. OlympicTrack Trials on July 18 in Sacramento, Calif. EMU has had a trackcompetitor in every Olympic since the Rome Games in 1960.
Kent State
Scott Stricklin, an assistant coach at Georgia Tech for the pastthree seasons, has been named head baseball coach. He replaceslong-time head coach Rick Rembielak, the all-time winningest coachof any sport in Kent State history, who accepted the head coachingposition at Wake Forest June 29.
Stricklin lettered three seasons as a catcher at Kent State. Heearned All-Mid-American Conference honors in 1992 and 1993 and wasnamed to the 1993 NCAA South II Regional All-Tournament team. Inthose two seasons, he handled pitching staffs ranked No. 1 and No.2 in the nation in earned-run average.
Former Kent State thrower Kim Kreiner is heading to the Olympicsin Athens after she threw for 55.65m, winning by over one meter.She holds the US record for javelin throw, and was a three timeAll-American while at Kent State.
Western Michigan
Western Michigan University has hired Penn State assistant RandyFord to become the seventh head coach in the 94-year history ofBronco Baseball. Ford replaces Fred Decker, the winningest coach inschool history with 791 wins over 29 seasons.
