LETTER: Media does not give enough attention to candidate

Starting with the spring primary and in some cases long before, whenever one candidate makes the news, his opponent is almost always asked to comment. The practice provides good, balanced reporting on the political campaign. It is also considered to be just plain common courtesy for the voters.

In Indiana, we have had one glaring exception to that rule. Whenever Sen. Evan Bayh makes the news, there is rarely even a mention that he is running for re-election, much less a mention of his Republican opponent Marvin Scott.

This week, we learned that Evan "Hoosier Values" Bayh voted against the Marriage Amendment and Sen. Lugar voted for it. The media have not given us a clue where Marvin Scott stands on this important issue. We only know that Bayh voted in support of same sex marriage.

What I do know is that in 2003, Bayh voted against President Bush 45 percent, and he has voted with Hillary Clinton in support of abortion, gun control and gay marriage. Senate-candidate Marvin Scott is an intelligent and articulate professor at Butler University, a long-time National Rifle Association member and a supporter of traditional marriage. As an African-American, he understands the needs of Indiana's minorities. As a solid conservative, he will work to help Bush instead of working against him as Bayh does.

It's time for the media in Indiana to wake up and start giving equal time to the Senate candidate who stands for "Real Hoosier Values."
