Ball State alumnus Phil Eatherton has been nominated to be a member of the United States Olympic Team. The USA Volleyball team announced Friday they had submitted a list of 12 names to the United States Olympic Committee for approval.

Eatherton played four years at Ball State, from 1994 to 1997. In that time he became one of the programs best players, and is ranked first in total blocks with 575 and block assists with 477. He is also second in hitting percentage, fourth in most matches with double-figure blocks, fifth in kills (1,374), kills-per-game (3.43), and matches with double-figure kills, sixth in blocks-per-game average, tied for sixth in matches with 20-or-more-kills, seventh in total attempts, and 11th in solo blocks (98).

Doug Beal, coached the gold medal winners in 1984, coaches the team, which is currently ranked No. 6 in the world. The team also won medals in 1988 and 1992, winning the gold medal again in 1998 and the bronze medal in 1992.

If Eatherton is approved, he will become the first Ball State men's volleyball player to compete in the Olympics. The Department of Athletics Communications & Marketing could not confirm of Eatherton would be the first Ball State player to be named to a team.
