In a meet set up for developmental and training purposes, several young athletes on the women's track and field team were given a chance to compete Saturday while many of the veteran athletes sat out of the Notre Dame Open.
"With it being not scored, I don't think the other teams were trying to load up any of their people. I think we were all trying to do the same thing," head coach Sue Parks said.
With an important meet against Mid-American Conference foe Miami coming up Saturday, Parks felt it necessary to give some of the team rest and the other younger athletes a chance to gain experience.
Missing several of their top competitors, the Cardinals struggled in their performance, collecting no first place finishes.
However, sophomore Bridgett Coleman managed to place second in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:05.94 while freshman teammate Amanda Brewer was approximately one second behind her in the fourth spot.
BSU proved to be dominant in the high jump, as both junior Ashley Gillies and senior Christine Velgersdyk were part of a three way tie for third place with a mark of 1.63 meters. In sixth was freshman Danae Tilker while sophomore Kristina Hervey and junior Ashlie Coleman tied for seventh place.
"(The younger athletes) need the competition and get used to the level that we're trying to compete at. I think the experience was worthwhile even thought the weather wasn't conducive to great marks," Parks said.
The throwing events continued to be a strong point for the Cardinals as freshman Stephanie Hamer took third in both the shot put and discus.
Hamer's mark of 12.85 meters in the shot put placed her behind Central Michigan's one-two finish of Katie Davis and Mary Raney. In the discus, Hamer took third place on a 38.24 meter throw.
Sophomores Julia Kidd and Jennifer McCoy each took third place in the hammer throw and javelin, respectively, as well.
The Cards head to Oxford, Ohio this Saturday for the nine-team Miami Invitational in the third meet of their outdoor season.
