WOMEN'S TRACK Athletes qualify for NCAA regionals

Ball State places second to host Indiana State Sunday

Two athletes had NCAA regional qualifying marks Saturday as theBall State women's track team placed second in the PacesetterInvitational.

Host Indiana State won the meet, dominating the field with apoint total of 248, with the Cardinals behind them at 170.

Third-place Valparaiso had 115 points and Eastern Illinois wasfourth with 88 points.

Junior Ashley Gillies and sophomore Jill Scully highlightedBSU's performance as they both qualified for the NCAA Regional.

Gillies won the high jump at 5-8 while Scully capturedfirst-place honors in the 5000-meter run in 16:49.17.

Freshman Amanda Barnhart earned two personal bests on the day: a26.26 mark in the 200-meter dash and a winning 19-2 12 in thelong jump.

Barnhart was beat out in the 200-meter dash by teammatesChristina Poulson, Jennifer Dennie and Alex Marshall, who finishedsecond, fourth and sixth, respectively.

Poulson's second-place time of 24.08 was just .12 seconds fromqualifying for the regional. She also grabbed second place in the100-meter dash, again just fractions of a second away from theregional-qualifying time.

In the 100-meter hurdles, sophomore Jennifer McCoy grabbed oneof the team's six total first-place finishes with a personal recordtime of 14.23. McCoy also took third in the javelin throw at121-1.

The 1500-meter run proved to be a strong event for the Cardinalsas freshman Rose Lehe took first and sophomore Nicole Hartfordsecond, separated by less than five seconds.

Also in the distance events, junior Sarah Huddleston won the5000-meter in dominating fashion. Her time of 18:18.58, more than30 seconds ahead of the nearest competitor.

The Cards begin their fifth meet of the outdoor season Fridayand Saturday when they travel to Hillsdale, Mich. for the HillsdaleRelays.
