WOMEN'S GOLF Bodine records lowest three-round total in team history

The women's golf team is rounding into form at the right time. The team finished fifth at the Lady Colonel Classic in Richmond, Ky., shooting a 955 (321-317-317) to earn its best finish this spring.

Coach Shelley Sanders thought the team played well at the Arlington Country Club.

"It was a good finish," she said. "We tend to play that golf course well."

The Cardinals have steadily improved throughout tournaments this spring. The team finished 10th, 12th and 10th to start its first three spring events. The eighth-place showing at the Illini Classic and this fifth-place finish have the Cards playing well heading into the Mid-American Championships on April 23.

"We won a tournament in the fall (Youngstown State Fall Invitational), but this is the best (finish) so far this spring," Sanders said.

The Cardinals had two golfers finish in the top 10 for the tournament. Carmen Bodine fired three sub-80 rounds (79-77-76) to finish seventh overall. Chelsie Flannery shot a team-low 75 on the final round to finish tied for ninth (84-78-75).

Sanders was pleased with the two top-10 performances. "They put together three good rounds," she said.

Flannery, a freshman, has now competed in back-to-back tournaments. She finished tied for 41st at the Illini Classic after shooting 80-82.

"I'm encouraged by what I see from her," Sanders said. "She just needs more experience."

Bodine continued her consistent play this season by again finishing as the top Cardinal golfer.

"She's had a consistent spring, and I'm pleased with her performance so far," Sanders said.

Lisa Robertson tied for 38th (83-83-82), and Amber Uphaus tied for 45th (82-86-84).

Katie Sundberg also competed, but was disqualified in the final round. After opening with 77-79, Sundberg was disqualified for an illegal procedural drop from a lateral water hazard. She abandoned her original ball by taking a drop when she shouldn't have. And when she teed off on the next hole it was too late to correct the mistake.

"It could've easily happened," Sanders said. "Katie played really well, but (disqualifications) happen unfortunately. I'm just glad that it happened this week instead of at the MAC."
