Tietz, Elemo's statements from Wednesday's student senate meeting

Statements from Wednesday's student senate meeting

Before we move into the special orders of business, I would like to make a brief statement concerning recent events. First and foremost, I stand by the statements that I made in the Daily News on Monday, April 5. I was at the Lambda Chi Alpha House on Saturday evening and I take full responsibility for that.

However, I was not intoxicated and I did not receive a citation that night. I have already sought legal advice and I do have legal council. These charges against me will be dismissed and I will present my evidence to the proper authorities to ensure that this situation is cleared up as soon as possible.

In the meantime, I am a student first. I will focus on my academics, and I will continue to do the job of vice president that the students elected me to do - my ability to do so has not and will not be compromised. Because I have sought legal council, I will be unable to answer questions at this time, but following the outcome of this situation, I will entertain any questions from the senate.

With that said, I will now turn the podium over to President Ben Tietz.

Good afternoon.

I am going to take this opportunity to speak briefly about two current situations.

First, the situation concerning Vice President Elemo is a difficult situation. It is difficult to understand and difficult to believe. It is important to know that not all the facts regarding the situation are known. No one, on either side, knows the entire story. Vice President Elemo has stood by her version of events that night and has not changed them once. I would encourage students to not make judgments before all of the facts are known. Talk of resignation and impeachment are brash and irresponsible at this point in time. Vice President Elemo deserves the right to defend herself and present the evidence to support her version of events. She also deserves the right to try and exhaust all options in proving her innocence. She is now entering a legal case, and we think that it is best to see the results of the legal case before any decisions are made regarding her position. If she is indeed found guilty of having this citation, then it would be appropriate to discuss resignation and/or impeachment. Until that point in time however, Vice President Elemo should be allowed to remain in her position and do the job she was elected to.

On another matter, the "Police Yourself" campaign has generated much publicity and a great deal of response from students. The responses to the campaign range from extremely positive to extremely negative. It is my job as president of the Student Government Association, to represent these views to the administration and city officials. The general response to the campaign right now is mixed in that a great deal of students support the idea of the campaign, but disagree with the way in which it is being enforced. We will continue to monitor and gauge the responses of students, and continue to voice these concerns to the administration, city officials and Muncie community. Last night, Brayton/Clevenger hall, along with SGA, sponsored a forum about the "Police Yourself" campaign. We will be holding another forum next week Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. in TC 102. One of the promises that we made during our campaign is that we would educate, inform and give students the opportunity for their voices to be heard. I think the forum held last night accomplished those goals. Many questions were answered and people got the chance to voice their concerns. Student voices do not fall on deaf ears. We hear your concerns, and we make sure that they are heard.

I encourage students to critically think, and do the research before listening to rumors and making judgments based on those rumors. Students should continue to voice their opinion - students do have a say, a rather large voice of 18,000 students.

Thank you.
