Mid-American Conference rival Ohio Bobcats will visit the Ball State softball complex twice over the weekend, squaring off with Ball State once on both Friday and Saturday.
Ohio comes off two huge wins against Marshall, the defending MAC tournament champions. The Bobcats won 3-2 and 5-4 on Tuesday, improving their overall record to 9-19 and 3-2 in the MAC.
The two games featured a two-run home run by Kiersten Scrima in the first game, and two two-run home runs by Erin Chapman in the second game. In that second game, Marshall started off strong with four runs in the top of the first inning, but the Bobcats rebounded when Chapman hit her first home run out of the park. Because of the four runs given up, Ohio's Katlyn Mallette lasted that one inning.
The Bobcats finished the first game with three hits, and the second with seven hits.
Ball State (9-22 overall, 2-1 in the MAC) enters the weekend having been defeated twice by Indiana State in a doubleheader, 1-0 and 5-1. Four Cardinals had one hit apiece in game one, and the Cardinals tallied seven hits in game two. In the second game, Taylor Yancey led the Cardinals with three hits.
"We're gonna have to find ways to score runs," coach Terri Laux said. "Pitching will keep us in games, but we have to find a way to score runs. We have to attack."
The Cardinals found themselves short three players over the week, with Cortney Patteson, Morgan Metzger and Darla Dewig out with injuries. Dewig, who reinjured her shoulder last weekend and will need surgery, and Metzger, who fractured her tibia two weekends ago, are out for the season. Patteson is expected back in the lineup this weekend.
Laux doesn't expect the team to be affected by the loss of their teammates, and expects them to move on.
"You can't really focus on (the injuries)," she said. "We have to focus on everybody else playing their game."
