Students are most likely wrapping up the spring semester, but the fall is just around the corner. November should be an especially exciting month because of the presidential election.
Though politics is not always on the forefront of students' minds, Student Government Association is going to make it easy for them to prepare for the upcoming election. They will hold a voter-registration drive from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Friday in the Atrium of the Art and Journalism Building.
SGA made a smart move by putting the drive in the center of campus. Students can go in between classes, fill out a form to register, fill out an absentee ballot or fill out an application to participate in SGA. SGA senators, Congressman Mike Pence, Mayor Dan Canan and members from the Mitch Daniels and Ralph Nader campaigns will also be around for the drive.
Students can ask questions and get answers about candidates and SGA while making the first step to becoming part of the voting population.
It sounds easy enough, but students who voted in SGA elections still only made up around 20 percent of the student population in the last election. SGA is making voting in larger elections easier with this drive, but it is up to the students to get to the polls on Election Day. If SGA's goal is increasing voter turnout in general elections, its effort has just begun.
By providing this service, SGA is showing what it can do for students. This should be an annual event for SGA. Though it did not involve legislation, rallies or petitions, this move shows that SGA is capable of instituting change. Students interested in voting have no reason not to take SGA up on this offer.
