MEN'S VOLLEYBALL Team tied for first place after battling for win

Ball State takes five sets to down lowly Quincy on the road

After a victory Saturday and a little help from Ohio State over the weekend, the men's volleyball team is back in position to win its conference.

Ball State (19-7, 11-3 MIVA) barely escaped Quincy (7-15, 3-11 MIVA) with a 3-2 victory Saturday after it fell behind 2-0. The Hawks won the first game in extra points, 36-34. When Quincy stole game two 30-28, the No. 12 Cardinals was in trouble of falling out of first place in the Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association.

The Cards hit .164 in the first two games, while Quincy hit .293.

Ball State stormed back to force a fifth game, however, by winning the next two games 30-27 and 30-26, hitting .345 in those sets.

The Hawks pulled ahead 11-9 in the final game, but two Quincy attack errors evened the score. Big kills by senior outside attacker Amitai Sasson and sophomore middle attacker Scott Bushong helped the Cardinals grab a 17-15 triumph.

The victory kept Ball State atop the MIVA standings along with No. 14 Ohio State. Heading into the weekend, four teams were tied for first place in the league with three losses.-á

The Buckeyes, however, beat Lewis on Friday and IPFW on Saturday to knock both out of the four-way tie.

The Cardinals travel to Ohio State on Friday in the final weekend of the regular season. If Ball State wins and can beat Findlay on the road Saturday, it will win the MIVA and host the postseason tournament. Ball State beat the Buckeyes 3-1 Feb. 27 in Muncie.

Sasson led BSU over Quincy with a career-high 22 kills on a .357 hitting percentage. Senior outside attacker Jary Delgado added 14 kills, and Bushong slammed 11 kills and hit .529 in a rare starting role.
