Amidst unfavorable weather conditions, including winds of up to 35 miles per hour, the men's track and field team continued its outdoor season at the Notre Dame Open Saturday.
The javelin throw stood out as a strong event for Ball State as juniors Tom Green and Ed Beven and senior Andrew Miller finished first, second and fourth, respectively.
Beven set a personal record with his 58.44-meter mark, nearly 13 feet longer than his previous mark.
"The highlight of the meet for the team was Ed Beven," assistant coach B.J. McKay said. "He was coming in looking to make an impact on the team and trying to step up and beat some of the upperclassmen."
Also in the throwing events, junior Kyle Cleaver won the discus with a heave of 47.29 meters and placed third in the hammer throw with a 54.09-meter mark.
Sophomore teammate Jeremy Gillingham followed in the hammer throw, finishing eighth with a throw of 48.88 meters.
The 4x400 relay also took a first-place finish at 3:25.98, beating out both Notre Dame and Mid-American Conference foe Western Michigan.
"A couple of our guys came back from running bad races earlier in the day and really performed well in that relay," McKay said.
The sprinters battled against the wind all day, bringing many of their performances down; however, junior Angel Santiago benefited from the wind factor in the 100-meter dash, winning the event.
"The wind helped us get us to speed quicker, and it was really strong down the 100-meter straight," Santiago said. "But for the 200, you could barely get going out of the blocks with the wind right in your face."
Junior Ben Daniel tied for first in the high jump at 1.95 meters, while senior Paul Panning took first in the pole vault with a 5.00-meter mark, which regionally qualified him for the NCAA Championships.
"I feel like they're progressing very well. We have a really young squad that lacks experience in big meets, but they've come prepared for every meet," McKay said. "The team's reached a kind of comfort level with what's going on, and it's a really good environment we're in."
The Cardinals continue their outdoor season Saturday at the Miami Invitational.
