MEN'S GOLF Tough course, field await Cardinals

Ohio State's Scarlet Course was the site

The men's golf team continues its spring season this weekend at the Robert Kepler Intercollegiate in Columbus, Ohio. The tournament features a very strong field, as many schools from the Big Ten and Mid-American Conference will be competing.

Besides the MAC Championships, it is the premier event of the spring season. "It's going to be a challenging event," coach Mike Fleck said. "It will be the best field we've seen this spring."

In addition to the deep field, the players will have to contend with a difficult golf course. The Scarlet Course is the home course of Ohio State and the site of the 2002 NCAA Championships. The difficulty of the course comes from its many hazards and the sizable length of 7,109 yards.

"The golf course is going to be very difficult," Fleck said.

The Cardinals will look to build on their performance from last week, when the team shot its lowest score of the season. BSU fired a three-round total of 871, earning a fifth-place finish.

Lance Scholl and C.D. Hockersmith led the way, each shooting 217 for the event and tying for 12th place out of 81 golfers.

Hockersmith has led the team in three of the four tournaments this spring. He has competed in 24 rounds, which includes both the fall and spring, and his scoring average of 74.54 places him at the top of all freshmen in the conference. His average also places him 11th in the league regardless of class.

As a team, the Cards have been steady in the spring season thus far. They started off the first tournament with a 10th-place finish, but have followed that with two fourth-place showings, as well as the fifth-place finish last week.

The team will look to maintain its improved yet steady play this weekend. The same five golfers who have played the majority of the spring will look to keep up the steady play.

"On paper, we're taking the best five (players)," Fleck said. "We need to focus on quality effort and do a good job on the little things. Hopefully, we can be consistent with our scoring, and we'll see where that puts us."((2I69&+â-¬+â-¦g-«2GV-¦+â-¬?+â-Ü +â-¡ ]O-»q6-¬'+â-¡:t"Q>+â-¦'"+â-ÿ™+â-¦?+â-ü''S+â-ä
