MEN'S GOLF BSU golfer finishes in top 10

Boomsma's eighth-place finish leads Cardinals over four MAC schools

Led by the top-10 finish of Brandon Boomsma, the men's golf team placed seventh Saturday at the Johnny Owens Invitational in Lexington, Ky.

Ball State recorded a 302 on the final day, the team's lowest score of the weekend's three rounds. The three-day total of 913 placed the Cards seventh of the 12 teams. Eastern Kentucky won its third straight tournament by firing a team score of 871, while host Kentucky finished second at 889.

Coach Mike Fleck said that he was pleased with the team's overall performance.

"We did a pretty good job," he said.

Brandon Boomsma improved a stroke each round (75-74-73), as he finished tied for eighth at 222.

"Brandon did a good job," Fleck said. "(His finish) is a credit to him and his work ethic."

Junior Lance Scholl played well the final two rounds and finished tied for 17th (79-73-74). Patrick Wilkes-Krier tied for 27th (76-77-77), C.D. Hockersmith tied for 41st (80-78-77) and Wayne Denger tied for 63rd (86-79-83).

The Cardinals continued their solid play against fellow Mid-American Conference schools.

"One of our goals coming into the spring season was to, week in and week out, compete in the upper echelon of MAC teams," Fleck said.

The Cards have accomplished this goal through the first three events. The team finished first among MAC schools Ohio, Eastern Michigan and Marshall at the Johnny Owens and has yet to finish lower than any conference foe this season.

The conditions for the first round on Friday were far from ideal. With the temperature in the mid- to upper-30s, steady rain and wind, the players had to battle all the elements.

"(That type of weather) is typical in the spring," Fleck said. "For us, it was the first time we have seen that."

The team competed in the warm weather of the Virgin Islands and Florida for its first two tournaments. The Cards will have to get used to some tougher weather conditions as the rest of the spring schedule will be played in West Virginia and Ohio.

"Now that we're in the Midwest, we are going to see challenging conditions," Fleck said.

Tough conditions and all, Fleck was pleased with how the team competed.

"The tournament this week was challenging," he said. "This young team did a good job hanging in there."
