MEN'S BASKETBALL Ball State signs forward from Chicago

On the first day of the spring signing period, the Ball State men's basketball team filled all of its available scholarships for the 2004-05 season by signing a player from Chicago Simeon High School.

Anthony Newell will become the second recent graduate of Simeon to suit up for the Cardinals. Cameron Echols is the other, but he finished his career with the Cardinals this past season.-á

"We think he's a great prospect and a guy who's really been under the radar," head coach Tim Buckley said about Newell.

Newell is a 6'6" forward who can shoot the 3-pointer and play three positions. Buckley said he sees him being most effective on the wing and as a power forward, but someone who can be a perimeter player and also post up and defend.

Buckley attributed part of Newell's signing to Echols, but also to the whole team.

"I think (Echols) helped," Buckley said. "All of our players were able to help us in that regard, because they are our best recruiters."

Newell averaged 18 points, nine rebounds and two blocks as a senior at Simeon and helped lead his team to a 26-5 overall record. He was also named all-conference, all-city and all-state honorable mention during the 2004 season in which his team won the Red-South Conference Championship and also appeared in the Class AA state quarterfinals.

Ball State had three scholarships available for the 2004-05 season, with the previous two going to transfers Charles Bass from Ohio State and Anthony Kent from Columbus State Community College. Because of the time he transferred from Ohio State, Bass is not eligible to play until the fall semester ends.
