LETTER: Whining, protesting only worth time on important issues

Dear Editor,

The recent uproar and rally about the university's "Police Yourself" campaign is ridiculous. To those of you who are protesting and complaining, I have a question for you. What is it exactly that you have a problem with? I have yet to read or hear anyone with a valid reason to be upset about the "Police Yourself" campaign, or for that matter the recent "crackdown" by Muncie police (and yes, they are two separate things). Why does a poster that outlines possible consequences of breaking the law upset you? Why would you protest that? It seems a little stupid, doesn't it?

The complaints that students should have had the opportunity to provide input about the posters beforehand is just as silly. If the administration had held a meeting where students could come and discuss posters, how many of you would have shown up? None. OK, well maybe the Student Government Association people would have, but nobody who didn't feel they had to attend would have.

Whining about the Muncie police "crackdown" is equally ridiculous. God forbid the police actually enforce the law. How dare they do such a thing! How dare they do their jobs and respond to noise complaints (which is what led to the incident at the fraternity house.) How dare they increase the number of patrols when we have had multiple stabbings, shootings, and deaths in recent months. Do you see how stupid this sounds?

Ball State students who follow the law and act in a sensible manner -- which, by the way, is the majority of the students -- have nothing to worry about from either the "Police Yourself" campaign, or the Muncie police. What we all have to worry about is the tarnish on Ball State's reputation that comes from the media showing Ball State students protesting trivial, pointless things when serious problems like the war in Iraq and the destruction of the environment are being ignored.

I would also like to note that I am disappointed by the backing of this protest by the DAILY NEWS. I agree that Ball State and the DAILY NEWS should encourage students to be active about important issues, but this is not an important issue to be acted about. Focus on the things that really matter.
