Dear Editor,
The piece you had on Dr. Kumcu's passing away (Faculty Remembers Professor by YaVonda Smalls, Chief Reporter, Thursday, April 8, 2004) contains a few pieces of inaccurate information, one of which is particularly upsetting for those of us who knew this wonderful man and his wonderful family so closely and for so long.
Unlike what was noted in the fifth paragraph of that piece, Dr. Kumcu did not travel to Istanbul "to visit his wife and daughter." His wife, Emine Kumcu, was in Indianapolis with him all the time; as always. When his condition became more serious, one of their two daughters flew from Europe (where she currently resides due to her present job) to Indianapolis right away and also stayed next to him all the time. And when they decided to go back (about three weeks ago), their younger daughter, who is a college student in Canada, accompanied them in their travel to Istanbul.
The fact is that Dr. Kumcu and his family decided 'together' to go back to Istanbul, Turkey, after the doctors in an Indianapolis hospital told them that all the options were exhausted. In Istanbul, in the hospital he was in, despite the final stages of the severe cancer that he had, he received the finest care and the special personal attention that he deserved. His wife, two daughters and his mom, together with other family members, were always with him in Istanbul, as well. The faculty members and students of Istanbul University (especially, the Faculty of Business Management), and his friends also visited him on a daily basis. They never withdrew their remarkable support, nor did they lose hope, until the very end.
We will miss him very much.
