Dear Editor,
Disappointment and Embarrassment: these are the two words that best describe my feelings towards Ball State, its administration, and two of its professors. My brother is a freshman who started school in January. During the Fall semester he was busy training to become a soldier in the Army National Guard. A week ago he received the call that he was activated to go to Iraq. He leaves on May 1, meaning he will miss final exams. This last week was filled with trying to settle all of his affairs since he will be gone for more than a year. One of the last things he thought he needed to worry about was getting credit for his classes he worked so hard on all semester.
However, he was told by administration that he had two choices: withdraw from classes or take incompletes. Incompletes must be fulfilled within a year, which would be impossible for my brother. I was outraged to hear that a college that gets its money from the state would deny him the acknowledgment of a semester of hard work just because he had to leave a week early to serve our country.
Now along with feeling scared of what he will face in Iraq and sad about leaving his family and friends behind, he has to worry that he may have to start college all over again.
I will give credit to three of his teachers for doing the right thing and giving him the grade he has earned to date. However, for the other two teachers and the administration, you have shown how much you appreciate our country's soldiers who put their lives on the line. I for one, am disappointed and embarrassed to be a student at this school.
