LETTER: Students do not need destruction to enjoy college

Dear Editor,

Ball State University has some of the nation's top-ranked programs, therefore making it a top-ranked university. We sure are not showing it. I realize that the college is a time where we are supposed to live it up before we enter "the real world," but we are overlooking a major factor. This is the real world. We are preparing to raise and support families and pay bills and succeed in our careers. I love life and have fun, but I don't need destructive things to help me do it. I don't know about everyone else, but I don't have time get drunk three or four times a week and have to deal with the baggage that comes with it. We should be happy that the university is trying to help us succeed. And I do mean "help," not "hurt." They care about us, whether you believe it or not. The police, too. They don't look for people to use as target practice. They are doing their jobs. Accidents happen and tragedies happen, which really sucks. No one wants that.

But we have to maintain our maturity and rise up together to keep this university on top. And if you are getting upset that you are getting in trouble for underage drinking, you need to rethink your priorities. If you are drinking while underage, you are breaking the law. Period.

Don't whine, don't point fingers, and don't be stupid. We got here because we are intelligent people. Let's start acting like it.
