News stories appearing yesterday in The Star Press and the Daily News may have created the impression that city and university officials are at odds about recent efforts to better address student safety and behavior in the neighborhoods around campus. This is simply not the case. While the university and the city do have different emphases and roles to play, we share the same fundamental goals. We want the neighborhoods around the Ball State campus to be safe and positive places for both students and Muncie residents to live. We want students to know the consequences, both through university discipline and the local judicial system, of violating state and city laws, and we hope this information will encourage more students to make responsible decisions. Most of all, we want every Ball State student to have a safe, positive and healthy college experience, and we want the university and the city to continue to be good neighbors and productive partners.
