LETTER: Campaign reveals BSU paternalism, stifles expression

Dear Editor,

In response to the "Police Yourself" campaign, I am amazed at the paternalism reflected by Ball State's current administration and find it not slightly disheartening to know that the college from where I graduated has undertaken the role of troop leader, warden and Mom. Has Ball State become the Bible Belt's gangsta's paradise such that it requires a "community-policing effort"? The purpose of college is to enable students to become free-thinking, academically trained professionals. Will students now be awarded patches for staying home on Friday night? How can a college seeking to police its students expect to turn out a single free mind? I am disappointed in BSU's present efforts to stifle self-expression and choice in a place where those qualities are not found in overwhelming abundance.
