JAY 101: Events provoke random thoughts on campus life

Instead of adding fodder to the fire that is student reaction to recent events by arguing a singular point, I decided to make a list of random thoughts for today's column.

These "nuggets" if you will, should be taken to heart if you are open-minded. If you aren't, then I am just joking.

--Which Ball State-based slogan has inspired more crappy jokes: "Everything you need" or "Police Yourself"?

--How many students have been to Whitely? How many could find it on a map of the city?

--The county is going to get a lot of money from these busts. Sweet! Maybe we can lease a snow plow or something.

--Does Ball State have a new president yet?

--If you rearrange the letters in Olufunmbi Elemo's name, you are one "t" short of spelling "foul bile moment."

--Public officials (student government included) are elected in part to represent their constituents. But they are also elected to advocate sound public policy. If the views students hold would affect the community, the school or even the students themselves adversely, the elected officials should stick to what they know will be best.

--Why isn't there an uproar of "Police Yourself" magnitude when police start cracking down on speeding on Bethel Avenue? If you think about it, it is the same principle. Muncie and Ball State Police are focusing on an area near campus in order to stop an activity that most students do, even though it is illegal.

--Douglas McConkey carries that verbose title of vice president of Student Affairs and Enrollment Management. Who, then, is the president of Student Affairs and Enrollment Management? And why doesn't that guy ever show his face?

--Some people are claiming that police officers ripped up citations given to basketball players after the cops learned that the athletes were on the team. I highly doubt the truth of that rumor, seeing as how I've heard that same story since high school.

--Regardless of what really happened with the basketball players, could somebody please ticket those guys for not following their shot?

--Whenever a new police policy or tragic death occurs, why must somebody always compare it with the war in Iraq or Sept. 11, 2001? I see no similarities. If you compare the two, you are either blowing the local events out of proportion, or you are discrediting the enormity of war and politics.

--The genius who came up with the "Police Yourself" campaign should be given a public relations Silver Anvil Award for this work. Yeah, many students despise it, but every student knows about it. It's like my column. I could get 12,000 pieces of hate mail, but I would at least be happy that 12,000 people read "Jay 101."

--Accounts say police showed up at the house party that led to Kyle Harford's death to answer a noise complaint. If they had cited the underage drinkers at that party and sent them packing, would Harford be dead today?

--Students are complaining that they are no longer free to walk home after drinking, for fear they will be ticketed for minor consumption or public intoxication. If Michael McKinney had been stopped while he was walking to his friend's house after a night at the bars, would he be dead today?
