The annual spring scrimmage for the Ball State football team saw sophomore quarterback Joey Lynch separate as the team's man at that position.
"I thought Joe Lynch did a good job with the football," head coach Brady Hoke said. "I thought he made good decisions, and I thought he threw the ball well.
"I think he's made a separation there. We've got to find out what we want to do with the second spot right now."
Lynch completed 18 of 30 attempts for 270 yards and three touchdowns with no interceptions to help the Cardinal team defeat the White team 24-0. The Cardinal team was composed of the No. 1 offense and No. 2 defense, while the No. 1 defense and No. 2 offense made up the White team.-á
Todd Racine and Casey Gillin rotated at quarterback in each series for the White team. Gillin passed for 43 yards and Racine passed for 31.
At the start of the game neither team was able to get things going offensively, with each committing a fumble.-á-á-á
"I thought we got very sloppy in there a couple times with the ball and how we played," Hoke said.
Tailback Larry Bostic, who moved to the position from wide receiver, fumbled late in the first with Andy Stark recovering; however the White team was unable to do anything with the turnover.
Conversely, when Racine fumbled early in the second on the White's 12-yard line, the Cardinal offense quickly scored with Lynch's 8-yard pass to Dante Ridgeway.
Ridgeway caught seven passes for 93 yards, including another touchdown in the third from 15 yards out. Lynch also connected with tight end Michael Steinhaus for two long passes, including his game-best 47-yard pass and a 33-yard touchdown pass in the third quarter. Bryan Williamson also had three receptions for 46 yards for the Cardinal squad.-á
Lynch said even after his spring performance he can't get too confident. The three quarterbacks, along with two incoming freshman will continue to compete for the job over the summer and fall practice.
"All spring it was tough. I think all three of us played OK; there were good battles throughout," Lynch said. "You just try to be the most consistent guy from day one to day 15 knowing you're going to have a couple good days and a couple bad days.
"I think I played OK. I think I definitely could have played better. Overall mentally I feel really good with the offense, and we've just got to go from there."
While Ball State had success with the passing game, they weren't able to balance it with a strong running game.
"I don't think we ran the ball worth a darn on the inside," Hoke said. "Our second offensive line has to make great strides during the summer in fundamentals, in technique and in strength."
Tailbacks Scott Blair and Bostic ran for a combined 63 yards, with Bostic averaging 3 yards a carry and Blair 2.5.-á
Defensively Erik Keys had eight tackles to lead the White team, while Randall Means had seven. The Cardinal team was led by Alan Buckley, who had six tackles and an interception, while Lorenzo Wims had two sacks among his five tackles.-á-á
With his second spring season now completed Hoke said he feels the team has made progress.
"We're a more disciplined team. I think we have a more competitive nature to us," Hoke said. "I think we understand the tempo of what things need to be done and how we want to play."
