Family announces services for student

The funeral services for the Ball State sophomore who died last week have been scheduled for Wednesday.

The services for 19-year-old Jennifer Pokorny will be held at 6:30 p.m. at Shirley Brothers Mortuary, 9900 Allisonville Road, Fishers.

Visitation and calling hours are scheduled to precede the service from 5 to 6:30 p.m.

The architecture department will hold a memorial service today at 1 p.m. for Pokorny, who was a landscape architecture major.

German Cruz taught Pokorny's architecture studio class, and he remembers Pokorny as one of the top students in the class.

"She was one of my best students," Cruz said. "She was so easy to teach. She engaged the directions that you gave her. Very few students are like that."

Cruz described Pokorny as a quiet girl but intense and focused on her work.

"There are students in the studio who are leaders not because of the way they talk but because of what they do," Cruz said. "She was among that group."

This semester was the second time Cruz had Pokorny in class, and Cruz said he was broken-hearted when he heard the news of Pokorny's death.

"I don't cry often," Cruz said, "but I've cried a lot the past few days."

With all the time architecture students and professors spend together, Cruz said it is easy to become close. He said he looked at Pokorny as if she were his own child.

"I had the privilege of knowing her probably more than other instructors," Cruz said. "When this happens, it's like you lost your heart."

Pokorny's family and close friends will speak publicly about her life at the funeral services Wednesday. The family has asked media to delay further coverage until then.
