SONDRE LERCHE "TWO WAY MONOLOGUE"

Astralwerks Records

Sondre Lerche is a clever little fellow from Norway who writescatchy singles for European radio. Each track on his latest album, like the others of his catalogue, is a melodic gem with a lyricalpayoff in the chorus. For example, take this lyric from the lasttrack: "For now it's too late, for you may not wait, and thingsthat I have yet to know vanish before they're complete." Clever, indeed! This doesn't translate very well overseas, however, as theonly paying job he could conjure in America would be a couple songsin a B-level romantic comedy. Nevertheless, songs like theCardigan-ish "On the Tower," the electronically orchestrated "DaysThat Are Over," and the poor-excuse-for-bluesy "It's Too Late" arethe tip of the emotional iceberg he brings with "Two WayMonologue." Fans of Badly Drawn Boy and Travis will be especiallysatisfied with this LP. Just dumb your music down a little so therest of us can follow, Mr. Lerche, and you'll make it bigsomeday.
