Incubus burst onto the rock music scene in 1999 with their breakout album "Make Yourself." An album that brought a southern California feel that seemed to be what rock needed to usher in the new millennium. They returned in 2001 with "Morning View" which had the same feel good music.-á Now after three long years of waiting and fans screaming for new material they release "A Crow Left of the Murder..."-á
With the current trend of bands changing their style, Incubus has done the same. Sometimes this trend yields good results, this time it did not. "A Crow Left of the Murder..." is nothing but ill-timed chord changes, and ramblings from lead singer Brandon Boyd. After the light-hearted lyrics of the previous albums the band turned to politically centered lyrics, which with the innocent vocals of Boyd seem to come off more like whining than sending a message. During "Megalomaniac," the first single released, Boyd Rants "I hear you on the radio, you permeate my screen, it's unkind but if I met you in a scissor fight I'd cut off both your wings on principle alone, on principle alone." These lyrics do not fit the style incubus has previously shown to the public.-á
When compared to the albums Incubus has released prior to "A Crow Left of the Murder..." this album seems too experimental and does not fit with the Incubus most fans have come to know and enjoy. If this album would have been the first album Incubus released as their major label debut it may have been worth spending the money on. Yet as it stands with their earlier albums it sticks out like a sore thumb. It had the potential to be a good album but the change of style does not fit the band.
