CCIM extends dean search

University not satisfied after interviewing first two candidates

Ball State's College of Communication, Information and Media may be without an official dean for the rest of the school year, a university official said.

"Right now, (with) the two candidates that came to campus, after a series of interviews and a review of their credentials, we decided it was not a good fit between what they had to offer and the needs of the college," search committee chair Ray Montagno said.

The candidates were Jon Petrovich, former vice president of Sony Pictures Television International, and Roy Moore, associate dean for graduate studies in the University of Kentucky's College of Communications and Information Studies.

Both candidates visited the university in March to meet with acting dean Michael Holmes. During their separate visits, they also spoke in a public forum and spent time in each of the college's four departments: the Department of Telecommunications, Department of Journalism, Department of Communication Studies and Center for Information and Communication Sciences.

Montagno said he couldn't provide details about why the candidates were not selected. The candidates have been notified of the committee's decision, however, he said.

A few members of the dean search committee attended the Broadcast Education Association Conference in Las Vegas this week, which could lead to a couple of new candidates for the position in the next couple of weeks, Montagno said.

"Assuming it doesn't pan out, the search will be terminated this year, and that decision will be made before the end of the semester," Montagno said.

After meeting with Acting President Beverly Pitts Tuesday, Montagno said that if the current search is terminated, Pitts will convene a new committee and initiate a search as soon as possible in the next academic year.

Pitts said her goal is to complete the search before the end of this year, but postponing the search would also be beneficial if necessary for the college.

"Sometimes when we'll have an unsuccessful search year, the next year we'll have outstanding candidates, so if that's what's best for the college, that's what we'll do," Pitts said.

Montagno said the committee has learned a lot during this year's search, which began Oct. 1. "I think we learned about the market for candidates and the nature of the kind of person that the college is looking for," he said.

The dean position is so important because faculty look to the dean for leadership, vision and direction in the college, Montagno said.

While this year's search didn't have the kind of outcome the committee expected, Montagno said the process was still effective and will continue to be successful.

"I personally enjoyed the process," Montagno said. "I had good working relationships, and I am pleased with the level of professionalism and collegiality exhibited by the committee members."552"™b6+â-ª+â-¼d,?[A"+â-Çzt-¬-º--W+â-¬}+â-¦@-¬+â-¦l4+â-¢'5+â-ï--P0-¦+âc+â-à7-º+â-ó+â-£B+â-+--W??gT"+â-èQ7''iZ*--+â-ä+â-£+â+â-+n+â-¦c-¦0-¬+â-Ñi,-»?J+?O3+â-ê?O.-¦l]?S|*+â-¬vA"z~'+â-¼+â-+-¦"}+â-¦-¦~R-¦t+â-ú:>+â-¦+â-àV-»?jd+â-ÇiN™+â-¦f-+â-Ñs+â-£+-º+â-¦A+â-+™[0+â-Ü+â-ªY5-¿d:-¦-¦qAi@6*}--:+â-ª'pt+â-+-+de"+â-âT2+â-¦ql?_s+â-ª+â-¬v=?"bS-¦+âog+â-Ñ+â-ª+â-¦+â-£-¿v-¦U^}-ó[?o2.D; :51-¦-ºX+âN_CCIM dean pg1_4/16/04DNEditorial552+â-+x%'2AUDT
