WOMEN'S GOLF BSU starts season at Florida invites

The Ball State Cardinals are beginning their season this weekendwith a trip to Tampa, Fla. The NIU Snowbird Classic at Pebble CreekGolf Course will be the Cards first test this spring.

"This spring when the season begins in Florida, our mentalityhas to be that we are ready to compete right away," coach ShellySanders said in a Ball State press release. "In the past, we haveviewed our early events as a warm-up, which they are, but for ourprogram, they are also a chance to show how far we have come."

In the fall Ali Meyer, sophomore, scored a two round total of150 (75-75) to become the first individual in Ball State history toearn an individual medal at the Youngstown State Invitational.

Kate Sundberg, sophomore, placed 19th at last years MACChampionship, the best finish for the Cardinals.

"Ali and Katie each added to our team's growth and even more isexpected from them as sophomores," Sanders said. "I think Ali'sindividual win in September has provided extra motivation for her,Katie had a good fall season and shows great promise."

Following the Snowbird Classic, the Cardinals will head toCitrus Springs, Fla. and the El Diablo Golf Club for the Lady Herdclassic.

"We need to continue to grow, develop and improve every day,"Sanders said. "The turning point for this program now is if we canput four scores, collectively, together on a consistent basis. Ithink we have a confident group and I am excited about gettingstarted this year."

Sanders, in her fourth year of coaching, says that this year maybe the Cardinals best chance to perform well.

"I think 2003 was a crucial year in building our program," shesaid. "It allowed our players to see they can compete every timethey step on the course. "
