The Residence Hall Association chose its president for next school year on Thursday.
In the end, Valerie Phillips ran unopposed for the position. Current vice president Mackenzie Herrell was originally in the race, but she announced before the election she was dropping out in order to focus on resident assistant duties next year.
Phillips, a freshman, is the representative from Tichenor Hall, and she has served this year as a member of the RHA activities committee. She is also a member of Tichenor/Trane Hall Council's executive board.
In a packet given to representatives, Phillips outlined her goals for her term as president, saying she wants to establish better connections with other campus organizations, host a diversity fair and develop relationships with every member of RHA.
"I want to be able to know every individual person," Phillips said. "Being able to work with a team requires getting to know people on a personal basis."
Phillips said she wanted to hold a diversity fair this year, but it didn't happen. She said one way to pull it off next year would be to promote involvement with other campus groups. She said in the past RHA has not worked enough with other organizations.
"There's not a complete lack of (interaction)," Phillips said, "but it can be improved if initiative is taken."
Phillips said she wants to make RHA more well-known by visiting residence halls and campus organizations.
