SOFTBALL Four teams overpower Cards in Georgia tourney

Ball State unable to overcome errors, hitting woes in losses

Careless defensive play and continued struggles at the plateproved too much for Ball State's softball team (1-7) over theweekend at the University of Georgia Tournament. The Cardinals fellto all four other teams competing.

In the first game, the Cards fell to Maryland, 2-1. TaylorYancey scored the lone run on the last play of the game Darla Dewigand Jodi Willis both singled for Ball State's only hits.

Against Winthrop, the Cardinals collected four hits to theEagle's 10, and lost 7-2. Ball State gave up three runs in both thefirst and second inning. Kris Burdine collected two hits, includinga triple. Nicki Hellem relieved Rachel Cleaveland in the final twoinnings, allowing six runs on five hits, taking the loss.

The Cardinals' stuggles continued Saturday, as they fell toGeorgia 6-2, then 5-4 to UNC-Wilmington. Against Georgia, theBulldogs collected seven hits to Ball State's five, including twoby Britni Clark.

Ball State had four errors against the Bulldogs, including threeby Kelli Jeziorski. An Error in the fifth and two in the seventhcost the Cards three runs.

"We played very well (against Georgia)," coach Terri Laux said."We came out very aggressive on the offensive side, and thatcarried over to the Wilmington game."

UNCW defeated Ball State, 5-4, off nine hits, to Ball State'seight. Dewig collected three hits and Willis added two. Both UNCWand Ball State finished with four errors. UNCW scored four runs inthe sixth on four hits and two passed balls.

"Looking at the box scores, some of the errors they gave weren'terrors," Laux said. "We didn't make the routine plays. We need tocontinue to work on some of the little things."

Laux said she has an athletic, but young team that is maturingand getting used to collegiate-level competition. The team wasdisappointed not have the opportunity of playing on Sunday (becauseof the earlier losses), she said.

"We should have played (on Sunday). We let an opportunity slipaway. My hope is that we learn from those mistakes."
