SOFTBALL Cardinals sweep doubleheader

Offensive struggles concern coach in victories

The Ball State softball team increased its winning streak to four games by sweeping Tuesday's doubleheader at Butler.

The Cardinals (6-15) won the first game, 4-2, in 10 innings and continued the success with a 2-0 win in the following game. The second game was called after five innings due to darkness.

Kelli Jeziorski and Darla Dewig led the way for the Cardinals in the first game. Jeziorski connected for three hits, including two doubles and the game-winning RBI. Dewig finished with two hits and was walked twice. The Cardinals finished with nine hits.

The Cardinals were ahead 2-1 in the bottom of the seventh when Butler tied the game with a homerun. Coach Terri Laux said the team left too many runners on base in the first game.

"We need to score runs and not be satisfied with one run leads," she said.

Randi Freese pitched all 10 innings for Ball State, and Laux said the team's defense was solid. Laux also said she was pleased with her team's ability to put the ball in play and said Butler's three errors were helpful as well.

In the second game, the Cardinal's two runs in the fourth would be all they needed, because the game was shortened. Laux said she felt the team played average, although she felt the team needed to come out and make quicker adjustments. The Cardinals finished with five hits.

"I didn't necessarily like the lack of offensive production," she said.

Amy Brownfield allowed four hits in the second game, and Laux said she was pleased with her ability to come out and take control of the game "on a team that goes out and swings the bat well."

Ball State travels to Iowa City this weekend for the Iowa Tournament. There, they will face Big Ten teams Iowa (twice) and Wisconsin (once).
