OUR VIEW Manship deserves second term

AT ISSUE: The Daily News editorial board endorses Manship Slate

The Daily News editorial board has decided to endorse the Manship Slate for the Student Government Association presidential race.

It was a close decision: a six to five vote with three abstentions.

The Manship Slate presented methods for working with the University Police Department, increasing use of Blackboard, establishing a statewide student government system and starting a DVD rental store.

The relationship between students and UPD will be a major issue over the next year. The slate plans to hold informal discussions with UPD to make students aware of UPD policies and help UPD stay in touch with student concerns.

Another idea the slate would like to pursue is convincing more professors to use the Blackboard system. Jayson Manship said he plans on speaking directly with professors instead of creating legislation asking that professors use the system.

The DVD rental store would give students without cars an option to rent movies while giving students experience owning and operating a business.

But ideas are not the only aspect of the slate that the Daily News is concerned with.

The Manship Slate has laid out plans on how it will achieve its goals.

Manship, the presidential candidate, is finishing his term as SGA president. He had time to lay the groundwork for some of his ideas, and an additional term will give him more time to implement them.

Regardless of the outcome on Tuesday, members of each slate should consider if serving the students is important to them. If it is, members of the losing slate should do their best to stay involved in SGA or other campus organizations. Both slates have capable leaders that the students need.

Students should remember that the Daily News opinion is not the deciding vote in this election. The only way a slate can be elected is if students choose that slate to represent them. To accomplish that, students must vote.
