LETTER: Manship Slate fails to appear at RHA

Dear Editor,

This letter pertains to the SGA Election which is in progress. For the past two weeks, both slates, Tietz and Manship, have been visiting organizations and promoting their slate. Thursday, at the Residence Hall Association meeting we had a special order of business: the Manship slate was scheduled to come and speak to RHA. At 5:00 p.m., we started the meeting, but low and behold, no Manship slate. As it turns out, the Manship Slate stood RHA up, an organization that over one-third of Ball State students belong to. What does this say to me? This says to me that the Manship Slate does not value the residences on campus' opinion. This says to me that the Manship Slate does not think campus residences are important. This says to me that the Manship slate cannot follow through with commitments. RHA Reps from the halls are liaisons between RHA and the hall they represent. Our job as reps is to be the voice of the residences that live in our hall. What if some of the residences in my hall asked me to ask questions on their behalf at the RHA meeting to learn more about the Manship Slate? I could not fulfill my duty because the Manship slate did not show up at RHA. Do we want a slate in office that does not follow through with what they say? Actions speak louder than words, and the fact that the Manship slate didn't even bother to make an appearance at RHA, like they said they would, is so loud that it's deafening. Not to mention, recently RHA sponsored Diversity Week. One of the activities during the week was a diversity contract. You would sign a contract that stated you would promote and respect diversity. People were given buttons with a footprint on them to promote diversity and encourage talking about diversity. I have seen more than one Team Tietz member sporting this button. I have not seen one Manship member wearing one. The fact the Team Tietz took time out of their just-as-busy schedules to come speak with us says a lot, not to mention the fact that they proudly wear their diversity buttons. So, who should I vote for?

A slate that says they are involved and support student organizations, especially RHA, or a slate that shows they are involved and support student organizations? Manship Slate, I just have one thing to say to you -- it's a quote from one of my favorite movies (Pretty Woman): "Big mistake. Huge."
