GYMNASTICS Cardinals drop conference meet to Eastern Michigan

BSU loses fourth straight meet by 0.65 points

Having to count three falls on beam, the Ball State gymnastics team lost to conference opponent Eastern Michigan 191.900 to 191.250. The Cardinals (4-7, 1-5 Mid American Conference) suffered their fourth loss in the last four meets.

Ball State split the four events with Eastern Michigan. The Cardinals soared above the Eagles in the bars, 47.825 to 47.350, and floor, 48.525 to 48.200. BSU posted a 48.250 on vault, while Eastern scored a 48.425.

The deciding factor in the contest was on beam. The Eagles had a 47.925, while the Cardinals struggled to a 46.650, their worst score on beam this year.

"I think sometimes what happens is that a team gets overconfident on an event," assistant coach Tom Housley said. "Being that it was senior night, there was also more pressure to perform. It (beam) crushed the momentum we had going."

"This week, we're working really hard on beam," Quiana Williams said. Although Williams is out for the season with an Achilles tendon injury, she remains involved with the team.

The Cardinals were led by Courtney Vojtasek, who tied for first place in the all-around with a 38.500. The senior also tied for first on floor (9.800) and won bars (9.800).

Senior Jenny Taylor recorded the best score on beam for the Cards (9.600).

Freshman Kelly Watson led BSU on vault with a 9.700, placing third overall.

Jessica Surridge finished fourth in the all-around, totaling a score of 37.425.

"Heading into bars, it seemed like we were going to have a really good meet," said Housley. "(After beam) we came back on floor, which was good."
