Athletics director Bubba Cunningham issued letters of reprimand last week to head football coach Brady Hoke and football strength and conditioning director Aaron Wellman. The reprimands concerned a disciplinary workout on the morning of Jan. 31, in which sophomore receiver Chris Jackson suffered frostbite on several fingers.
Cunningham said while personnel matters are unfortunate, they "arise a lot, as they do in a lot of businesses."
"The information gathering that I did led me to that conclusion (to issue the reprimands)," he said. "It's incumbent upon the entire (sports) department to take these incidents and learn from them."
The workout was held in minus 7 degree weather with a minus 12 degree wind chill, and it was supervised by Wellman. Hoke was out of town on a recruiting trip. Several other players took part in the workout in addition to Jackson.
Jackson had to receive treatment at Ball Memorial Hospital for the frostbite, but has since returned to working out with the team. Given that, Cunningham does not feel the incident to be a large issue anymore.
