Down to the wire

With one day of voting already completed, members of the Manship and Tietz Slates do some last-minute campaigning before polls close tonight and the winner is announced

As the last minutes of the Student Government Association election approach today, the presidential candidates and their slates are rushing to inform students about their platforms.

The Manship Slate hired Mark Carter of Carter's hot dogs to pass out free hot dogs to students at the scramble light Monday and Tuesday, Stemen said.

Carter will hand out another 150 hot dogs today from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., presidential candidate Jayson Manship said.

"We're not trying to buy votes," Manship said. "We just wanted to thank students for getting out and being an active voice on campus."

The Tietz Slate will also be at the scramble light today handing out information and encouraging everyone to vote, presidential candidate Ben Tietz said.

Both Manship and Tietz said they are concerned with student voter turnout and plan to encourage all students to vote, regardless of which candidate they choose.

Ryan Stemen, campaign manager for the Manship Slate, said he thinks many students will vote because both slates are active in campus organizations.

"I think this will be a very close race," Stemen said. "I think more students are interested because both slates are highly involved in student activities."

Katie Wiese, co-campaign manager for the Tietz Slate, said the candidates attended Monday's rally at the scramble light.

The Manship Slate also sent e-mails reminding friends to vote Monday, Stemen said.

"We're just having fun making sure everyone votes," Stemen said.

The Tietz Slate spoke on the Ball State radio station, 91.3 WCDR, Monday evening. Presidential candidate Jayson Manship was interviewed on the radio Sunday night.

Both slates spoke to various residence hall councils Monday night.

"It's just to give people one last opportunity to ask us questions," Tietz said.

Stemen said he posted additional Manship posters Monday night.

Ben Tietz, presidential candidate, said his campaign team will not put up extra posters.

"At this point, it's late in the game and a lot of people already know our names," Tietz said.

Students can vote for either the Manship Slate or the Tietz Slate at www.bsu.edu/votebsu until 6:45 p.m. today.
