Highlighted by 11 personal best finishes, the women's track and field team had several top performances at their most recent meet the Meyo Invitational.

Freshman Terri Abraham returned from a hamstring injury for her first collegiate meet. Abraham finished sixth in the long jump with a mark of 18-11 3/4.

"My coach said it was a good opener for me and we have three more weeks until the MAC (tournament). Hopefully I'll be able to jump a lot farther and place," Abraham said.

Sophomore Jill Scully won the 5,000-meter run with a time of 17:16.81 minutes. Scully's performance was the only first place finish for the team.

"I thought the distance runners really did a great job this week," Parks said. "We were looking for the sprinters and distance runners to step it up and they did that."

In the sprints, sophomore Crystal Winfrey finished ninth in the 200-meter dash while freshman Christina Poulson took tenth in the 60-meter dash.

The high jump provided solid results for the Cardinals, in which Ashley Gillies tied for second place at 5-6. Behind her were teammates Kristina Hervey and Ashlie Coleman, who both tied for tenth place.

"I thought we improved a lot over two weeks ago. We certainly have a ways to go, but this meet showed that we're prepared to compete with the top competition," Parks said.

The throwers also gave a strong performance. In the shot put, freshman Stephanie Hamer finished sixth at 41-5 1/4. Junior Holly Flittner took eighth in the weight throw with a 48-10.

The Cardinals continue their season this Friday at the two-day USTCA Collegiate Challenge, held by Penn State University. It will be the first scored meet of the year.
