According to his most vocal critics, our president is a bald faced liar who manipulated the American people.
If our president is a liar, what about all of the Democrats who lied too?
If George W. Bush is a liar, then what about Nancy Pelosi, the House Minority Leader? On Dec. 16, 1998, she said "Saddam Hussein has been engaged in the development of weapons of mass destruction technology, which is a threat to countries in the region, and he has made a mockery of the weapons inspection process." Is she a liar too?
If George W. Bush is a liar, then what about Tom Daschle, Minority Leader in the Senate? On Oct. 9, 1998, he signed his name to a letter, addressed to President Clinton which read: "[W]e urge you, after consulting with Congress, ... to take necessary actions (including, if appropriate, air and missile strikes on suspect Iraqi sites) to respond effectively to the threat posed by Iraq's refusal to end its weapons of mass destruction programs." Is he also a liar?
If George W. Bush is a liar, then what about John F. Kerry, a senator from Massachusetts and current Democrat Presidential candidate? His statement on Oct. 9, 2002 read: "I believe that a deadly arsenal of weapons of mass destruction in his hands is a real and grave threat to our security." Is this presidential candidate a liar too?
If George W. Bush is a liar, then what about Ted Kennedy, a vocal critic of the president's actions who claims the entire war was cooked up in Texas? On Sept. 27, 2002, Mr. Kennedy said: "We have known for many years that Saddam Hussein is seeking and developing weapons of mass destruction." Is this vocal critic a liar as well?
If George W. Bush is a liar, then what about Hillary Clinton? In her statement of Oct. 10, 2002, she said: "Intelligence reports show that Saddam Hussein has worked to rebuild his chemical and biological weapons stock, his missile delivery capability and his nuclear program. He has also given aid, comfort and sanctuary to terrorists, including al Qaeda members ... It is clear, however, that if left unchecked, Saddam Hussein will continue to increase his capacity to wage biological and chemical warfare, and will keep trying to develop nuclear weapons." Is she a liar too?
If George W. Bush is a liar, then what about Al Gore, the former vice president? In his statement of Sept. 23, 2002, he said: "We know that [Saddam] has stored secret supplies of biological and chemical weapons throughout his country." Is this prestigious politician and alleged "winner" of the 2000 election a blatant liar too?
The list goes on and on. Senators Carl Levin, Robert Byrd, Jay Rockefeller, Bob Graham and others have all made similar statements. Many members of President Clinton's cabinet, including Madeline Albright and Sandy Berger, have made similar statements. President Clinton himself believed Saddam had WMD capabilities.
Maybe, in the end, the problem wasn't a lying president but one who actually told the truth. Perhaps Saddam really did have WMD's, or maybe everyone was wrong about them. If the intelligence community is broken, lets fix it, but Bush's critics need to review the facts before engaging in political diatribe.
