Students arraigned on drug charges

Court's schedule keeps one student from responding until next week

Three Ball State students appeared for arraignment in Delaware County Court Thursday after being arrested on charges of drug possession.

Because of the court's schedule, Delaware County Deputy Prosecutor Mark McKinney said student Paul Bobish, who was also arrested this week, will respond to charges sometime next week.

Bobish posted his $25,000 bond. His brother, former student Joseph Bobish, received a higher standard of $50,000. Joseph did not pay it and returned to jail after responding to charges of dealing cocaine, maintaining a drug house and possession of marijuana and Ecstasy.

Joseph said he plans to hire Muncie attorney Michael Alexander. His trial is scheduled for 9 a.m. July 21.

After Darrell Richard requested a court-appointed attorney, he left the courtroom. Richard said his mother paid his $15,000 bond.

His roommate, senior David Zink, was escorted back to a cell. His $100,000 bond stemmed from five charges: dealing and possessing cocaine, maintaining a drug house and possession of Oxycodone. If convicted of each charge, Zink could spend 65 1/2 years in jail.

McKinney said before trial, sometimes charges are dropped.

Zink's trial is scheduled for 9 a.m. July 14.

Richard received fewer charges than Zink, McKinney said, because he only possessed Oxycodone and did not sell it.

"We don't believe he was involved with the dealing," McKinney said.

Richard was charged with possession of Oxycodone and maintaining a drug house. The maximum penalty of either charge is eight years.

When Judge Barnet questioned Richard's income, Richard said his financial aid and part-time position at Pizza Hut paid his rent. His trial is set for 9 a.m. July 19.
