A line of applications became available Monday to cultivate Student Government Association leaders and senators.
By the end of February SGA will have named 12 new senators and its presidential slates.
Elections board, separate from SGA, oversees spring campaigns. It ensures presidential slates follow guidelines such as the campaign budget and bond requirement. Former SGA and executive board member Joe Flores will serve his second year as elections board chairman.
Flores, Panhellenic council member Melissa Kish and senator Jessica Paxson make up the board. Two positions are vacant. Flores said he will announce the sheriff and secretary tomorrow at SGA's meeting.
The board ensures no one oversteps elections boundaries on campaign budgets and advertising during the spring election, Flores said. Fines begin at $10.
"There's nothing set forth in the elections code as far as a specific amount," Flores said. "If no one violates any rules, our meetings run pretty smoothly and quickly."
The board will organize a Feb. 19 slate debate in Cardinal Hall. Flores said the elections code requires candidates to be announced at the Feb. 16 nomination convention.
"Prior to the nomination convention, there are always rumors going around about who's running," Flores said.
The president, vice-president, treasurer and secretary must obtain 400 signatures for their application and have a combined grade point average of 2.7. Judicial court justices also need a 2.7 GPA and 50 signatures.
As for student senate, credentials board chair Lauren Mellinger said she expects the 12 positions to be filled by the end of February. Applicants' motivation should be representing students, Mellinger said.
"If you apply, and it looks like you have the characteristics, then you'll get in," Mellinger said. "We want to make sure they're in it for the students."
Off-campus, graduate, freshman and other positions are available in student senate. Applicants need to be available from 3-5 p.m. Wednesdays for SGA meetings.
Candidates for judicial and executive board can sign out applications in the SGA office.
