The Board of Trustees raised room and board to $6,228 for the 2004-2005 school year, an increase of 5.9 percent.
The increased cost, up from $5,880 this year for standard rooms, will cover food, benefits and housing improvements, Randy Hyman, dean of students, said.
The Board approved the increase at a meeting Friday.
Students under the Premium Plan will not pay the extra $348, though, which means about only half the students living in the dorms next year will pay the increase, Hyman said.
"If only part of the students are paying, someone must pick up part of the burden, and that goes to those who are already paying," Hyman said.
Since the Premium Plan became available, more than 1,200 students have lived in the dorms than before, Hyman said.
Last fall, residence halls had a 102 percent occupancy rate and have a 94 percent occupancy rate this spring, Hyman said.
"Our number one priority is to have the residence halls full," he said.
Hyman said the plan is to eventually stop using the Premium Plan but only when the university can fill the residence halls without it.
Hyman said the university is trying to make the residence halls more attractive so they will hopefully not have to use the Premium Plan in the future to fill the halls.
The architecture firm hired to build the new dorm next to Dehority Complex is also looking at ways to improve the living area in and around Dehority Complex, Woodworth Complex, Studebaker Complex and Noyer Complex, Hyman said.
Alan Hargrave, Residence and Housing Life director said the Premium Plan benefits students by keeping upperclassmen in the residence halls, who can then serve as resources for freshmen.
