The federal government gave the Indiana Department of Health$280,000 to study the reason for a large increase in AIDS and HIVcases in the state, according to the Associated Press.
The money will be used to help find if the most recent cases ofthe viruses were infected within the past year.
According to the Health Center Web site, 514 cases werediagnosed in Indiana in 2003.
An alarm should be going off for anyone who is sexually activeor uses needles to inject drugs. Anyone could be at risk. It onlytakes one infected needle or one sexual encounter with an infectedperson to contract the virus.
Prevention of this disease is possible. Knowing how to preventthe disease is half the battle. The other half is taking theinitiative to live safe.
